Marilyn first met Joe DiMaggio on a blind date in 1952.  Already a star in his own right, Joe had recently retired from baseball.  He was idolised across America, and was dubbed the greatest baseball player of all time.  By this time, Marilyn herself was achieving star status following the release of the films Niagra, Gentlemen Prefer Blondes and How  to Marry a Millionaire.  The world viewed them as the ideal couple.
In reality however, they could not have been more opposite.  Marilyn craved media attention, delighting in her star status, however Joe liked to keep out of the limelight.  Despite their differences, however, a magnetic force attracted them to each other.
Their blossoming romance was a media dream that reached fever pitch in January 1954, when they married in San Francisco.
Joe was however uncomfortable with the extent of media attention which appeared to be permanently focused on his wife, and constantly pressured her to give up her career in films.  When Marilyn cut short their honeymoon in order to entertain the US troops in Korea, a disgruntled Joe realised the extent of his wifes ambition.  Marilyn meanwhile rebels against the domestic life, that her new husband craves, concentrating on enhancing her career.
One hot night in September 1954, as thousands of people witness Marilyn perform the notorious subway scene in 7 Year Itch, Joe turns his back and walks off into the dark night.
As she secures the hearts and souls of the nation, she loses the man she loves.
