Marilyn met the 35 year old Arthur Miller in 1950, when he visited the set of As Young as You Feel. He was accompanied by his wife. He was an intellectual, having won a Pulitzer Prize for his play, Death of a Salesman and was considered by many as Americas greatest dramatist. They wrote to each other for several years until they met again in 1955. Marilyn claimed to have loved Arthur Miller from the moment that she first saw him. They dated secretly whilst Marily filmed Bus Stop, only becoming public in April 1956, when Arthur filed for divorce from his wife.
Marilyn and Arthur were married in July of the same year. Their union was a source of ridicule in the eyes of many, he being an established playwright and Marilyn a Hollywood star, yet to be taken as a serious actress.
Following the wedding, Marilyn began filming her latest venture, The Prince and the Showgirl. Arthur accompanied her and began to realise the pressures previously experienced by Jo DiMaggio.
Although the marriage began well, with Arthur joining Marilyn of set of her next two films, Some Like it Hot (1958) and Lets Make Love(1960), Marilyn began an affair with Yves Montand, her co star. She would soon become infatuated with Montand. It was this infatuation which would seal the end of her marriage to Arthur Miller. Whilst filming the Misfits, which Arthur Miller had written for Marilyn, their seperation was announced.
